Monika Johnson missing near alpental....

I never met her and don’t know her, but I can sure see the love and respect from the community.
Miracles do happen…

she loved breaking trail.... she'd break trail and still lap me while yo-yoing a slope... 

first time she went surfing with me, she had a hand-me-down leaky wetsuit and the weather was 45 degrees and raining, she still stayed in the water as long as everyone else and had a blast. 

her kind spirit and boundless enthusiasm is going to be missed.  Still seems surreal that she may be gone...

This is so sad.  I only had the pleasure of meeting her a few times, but her love of skiing and her companions was obvious.

My deepest condolences to her family and friends.  :'(  Be safe out there, everyone.

Damn, this hits our TAY family hard. She was an insipration to us all and will live forever in our memories and stories. My condolences to her family on their terrible loss.

Wish I'd known her. Sounds like a very cool woman and one who would have kicked my butt all over the hill. It's just terrible and way too close to home.

Several years ago my cousin died skiing in Alaska when a cornice he was on collapsed. His friend survived the same fall- God I hope she makes it. She was a great teacher when I did the glacier course and her feats are always inspirational.

Vertfest just won't be the same now. I'll miss the cowbell at the crevasse rescue class field trip.

Our sympathies to her family and friends.  She is indeed a good person who helped and inspired many, sharing her love of life and adventure with all whose lives she touched.  We too hope for the needed miracle.

I most recently skied with her a few weeks ago. I have a wonderful photo showing her and two other friends overlooking the Snoqualmie backcountry. This is how I remember her...and especially (!) how much she loved to break trail. She really loved it out there...and had a mountain soul for sure.

It's a hard hit. She was such an inspiration - her panache at Slush Cup, her incredible number of adventures, this will leave a huge gap. God bless you kiddo!

i didn't know her .. but i can say she has been an inspiration for me .. for her athleticism, drive and determination .. i was so sad to hear about this .. and send my heartfelt sympathies

I'm so sad .... what a great person. I always enjoyed running into her and her smile ...  damn it this is harsh.

this is so sad. she was a fixture in the b/c community in the cascades. one of the baddest chicks ever. i'll never forget being scared stupid climbing some gnarly headwall on mt hood, and she pretty much led us up the whole thing with a smile on her face.

We had such a great time at Mt Ann on Sunday. Tears flowing.

I was lucky to spend a day with her in the backcountry last winter. I had to beg her to quit after I don't know how many 1000 vert. She was a rock star. So sad.

It's very sad. My sincere condolences to her friends and family.

Thanks Greg for finding my sister'ss gear on the mountain and calling it in.  I appreciate what you've done.

I found her pack, skis, and full-face helmet on the summit of Red Mt. around 1:00 PM today.

After a close examination of her skis and poles, I determined they likely had been there since Tuesday, which fits into her work schedule, and called to see if she had shown up for work today (negative).  An examination of the substantial cornice at the summit showed a recent fracture leading to the cliff area to the north of Red. After looking around and trying her cell phone, we assumed the worst and traversed to the SE ridge trying to find a route down the north side of Red while alerting the Sheriff's Dept. and Alpental Patrol. We finally found a skiable route at the distinctive notch on the ridge at around 3:00 PM but decided to return as we would be running out of daylight and were not equipped for an overnight.

I think she lapped me every year at VertFest when I did the rec course and she did the race

I really hope that something is done @ VertFest this year in her memory. I'd be happy to get something started, whatever it might be.

a few weeks ago, getting ready to stomp yet another skin track . . .

I thought the same about Vertfest but wasn't sure on the timing. We were always the same speed at that race which made me feel like a hero until I realized she was doing 2 laps and me 1. She was incredibly strong.
