On 7-6-2011 Someone was spotted skiing down the Inter Glacier carrying an extra pair skis. Those would be mine. I burried them near the top of Inter glacier where the climbers trail drops on to the Emmons for Shurman. I sumitted on 7-7-2011 with the intent of skiing out from the cache point. I burried them pretty deep , but not deep enough. They may have melted out and someone thought ???? The skis are lime green Atomic Kailas 185 w/dynafit bindings. Any info would be appretiated,
Here is your culprit: cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php...near_Cam#Post1025389

[deleted now that he has changed his tune over at cascade climbers]
(Normally I don't publish anyone's email address in plain text on the web, but normally I don't see anyone swiping a pair of skis then demanding ransom within a month...)

This is excessive. Here's the email address in his on-line profile:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

If you look on cascade climber, this guy sounds embarassed and has indicated he is returning the guy's skis. Obviously he is inexperienced, probably he was a little hypoxic, and stashing gear on a climb didnt cross his mind.
Bottled microbrew atop interglacier is a good sentance. Better yet, he could sherpa skis to Glacier Peak or Mt Olympus (this could be a big bucket list summer for you Postmidlife)

At least the fool had the decency to try and find the owner. He could've kept his mouth shut and kept the gear...
EDIT: Moderators, are you going to allow this guys email to be posted?

As the "finder' , Do you take it with you and assume it was forgotten? hoping to return it....
Do you leave it alone and assume it's been left there to be picked up on the descent?
*Many years ago, I had a boda-bag that was flapping around, so I left it in the snow. On the way back we encountered a group going out. One guy had my boda-bag on his shoulder. I told him it was mine and he handed it over without issue.
**I have a 25+5 switch pack. I have the ability to jetison the big compartment and take yo-yo laps with the mini-pack. Last time out on interglacier, I wanted to drop the large compartment numerous times, but thought to myself that someone would pick it up thinking it was forgotten.
As far as this guy's story is concerned, I wouldn't be as critical of the finder as some of you are, because I am not sure IF there's a hard fast rule to follow about determining what is "stashed" gear vs what gear is left behind accidentily.... and should be picked to be returned...
....Someone enlighten me.....

"Yes, I am most likely going to be found under Chutzpah on Wikipedia. I called the owner just a few minutes ago and will be dropping them off at his work tomorrow, and I will DEFINITELY not expect, nor deserve, any reward whatsoever for I am by definition an ASS.
I am humbler from this experience and hope this does not affect my ski/mountaineering karma to its fullest extent.
To the owner of the skis, as well as his friends, I am absolutely sorry."

But when I had previously looked at that thread, seemed like contacting him via email might be necessary in addition to just posting the rightful owner's phone number for him to call, since his earlier statements are so shocking that they deserve repetition here:
"Otherwise in ONE MONTH of this posting I am a happy camper."
"Additionally a reward of some sort would be greatly appreciated given (some of) the circumstances; hell, I had to pack them out for almost half the decent which put a big damper on my turns."
As for the general issue of gear that might have been accidentally left behind, skis at the top of Interglacier don't seem to fall into that category.

Anyone think there's a standard rule about finding gear?
No standard rule, just common sense. Gear, warm clothes, food...I'd probably let them be as they can be essential for survival. Booze or dope...I'd probably see those as a ground score and PARTY ON (esp. if I have none)! No one will be put in danger (or a trip be ruined) if I keep the bota bag.
Also, the context of finding an item can give you an idea about the intent of the owner. Skis at the top of a glacier, below a major climbing route where they would not be needed? Well, the guy admitted it: he was exhausted, hypoxic and not thinking clearly.
The finder (besides the obvious mistake of taking them) was only guilty of a making silly requests for reward.

Might be situational.
My takeaway from this: I'm thinking that if I'm going to Cache, I'll plan ahead and 1) label my stuff with contact info, and 2) maybe go so far as to create a laminated tag to attach the states, "these items have been left on purpose and I will be returning for them shortly, please do not disturb"...
P-buddy, while the whole situation might be regrettable, good on you for making an effort to make it right.

Don't disturb our stashes!
(beer may be a reasonable exception but only a service fee of one beer IF you re-bury the remainder)

P Buddy
welcome to turns all year.
Stick around, it's a good spot as people watch out for each other.
I say we all can learn from this so lets move back to the business of making turns and filing reports.

In the Snow-Troll-Single-Ski incident -- what was the deal with your one ski ? -- Was the pair stashed somewhere and snow melt freed one and it fell out of place ?
I looked at the "Winderness camping" guidelines for Mt Rainier and I didn't easily find rules about caching equipment and supplies in the park -- what are the rules in Mt Rainier park? (In the Alpine Lakes Winderness caching food or equipment for more than 48 hours is not permitted)

BTW, you also must turn in found property to the Park as soon as practicable. We have pretty solid lost and found procedures.

Thanks for the clarification does that include full cans of beer ?
BTW the 24 hour rule seems reasonable.
