Sport with Smuggest Participants was created by Scotsman
A poll has been undertaken.
See here
www.adventure-journal.com/2011/01/reader...uggest-participants/

Result to date are:
Ist place : Road Cycling 42.79%
2nd Triathalon 18.51%
3rd. Skiing 7.935
4th Rock Climbing 5.29%

Not surprised at the results personally  but if the poll was changed to Backcountry skiing , I bet it would move up to 2nd place.

smug   [smuhg]

–adjective, smug·ger, smug·gest.
1. contentedly confident of one's ability, superiority, or correctness; complacent.
2. trim; spruce; smooth; sleek.

Using definition 2, the roadies with spandex have the edge on winter athletes...

Smuggest participants? That has to be Marathon Blogging, which attracts all sorts of "media types" from East London ( which is far cooler than the West End ). In fact there are now Marathon Blogging events in Olympia and Portlandia.

You think there are Titanic arguments about AT vs. Tele? You should see what happens when the bloggers start talking about the benefits of using a moleskin notebook vs. iPhone. You don't want to be around when this goes down. Entire bars have been emptied of organic beer and hummus.

I think what makes Roadies smug is the shaving of the legs..... I never really understood that.
I felt quite out of place yesterday at my spinning class..... there was a roadie beside me with shaved legs and it turned into a bit of a competition I'm afraid.  I crushed him and definitey won my spinning class yesterday despite my hairy legs.

I think we BC skiers need something like that to set us apart.
Shaved arms?????

Roadies shave their legs because it helps in the healing process after a crash/road rash.
Shaving (prior) is supposed to reduce the introduction of infections during the healing process, and I believe that it promotes easier release of scabbing?

Going down on a road bike isn't as much a matter of "if", more of a "when"...

As much as I would like to appear to be less smug, it's not always possible. I have a lot of arc teryx gear, and even though I got it all from "steep n cheap", it's awfully hard not to look smug in that gear.

....Also, some resort days the first tracks are usually poached away from under the lifts first. Eventually there's no better option than rocking the line under the chair while skiing NTN and wearing Arc teryx....

I supose I could appear to be less smug if I took the Audi insignia off my helmet.... ;) ;)

I agree with you. I too am usually clothed head to toe in Arcteryx and it certainly helps with my smuggness coeffcient. I also feel smug when I carry my pack with skins in it when resort skiing.
I feel the smuggest when I am deskinning in the resort after a BC foray and waves of resort skiers pass me with obvious awe.
I usually put on a good show and peel my skins off with a flourish without taking my skis off and then make sure my avalung is hanging out ( not too far out... sort of carelessly... like I'm too BC to take time to put it away properly as I'm going for another BC lap) so it's noticed in the lift line.

AUdi's= nice car, I'd hang the AUDi key fob off the zipper on my BC pack if I were you. Says you recognize the irony but don't care.
Which reminds me of a joke I thought of... like a " you know your are a redneck when...."
Here it is.
"If the width of your skis is less than your annual income ... you may be a TAYer"

I throw this out just for a bit of fun....

You know how older skiers - often on message boards - make sport of the kids in their baggy pants, tall T's etc.? Have you ever wondered how the kids talk about guys in Arc'teryx?

;)

That's a fact!

my Arc'teryx stuff isn't so much baggy, but it is more of "relaxed fit." I had to go a size up in order to fit into it with my smugness.

I've always said that you can wear whatever you want if you rip well enough. You fall into that category. You at the I-90 Sunday?

I skied with Treadway at a gordycamp and he showed up wearing a flourescent yellow/green baggy one-piece with zippers and pockets and shit all over it. Not many guys could get away with it but he sure did.

Yeah we'll be there, you guys coming?

Not sure how the weather is going to turn out on Sunday, right now the forecast is calling for an 80% chance of smugness, unless we get the easterly flow which would likely bring fatuousness instead.

I plan to be there too, with my wife and kids - doing green, maybe even blue runs ;D

Come to think about this, I did see a group of people with Patrol and Arc'teryx jackets and Ibex layers. Would that be you guys? I'd like to stop by and say 'Hi'

Re: smugness in winter sports - snowskaters take the cake ;)

Arc'teryx is a 'has been' now. If you want the best: go Westcomb. Best hard shell breathability (eVent), clean & functional design, made in Canada.

Cheers
Ivo

How's this for smug? I abandoned my purchased-on-deep-sale Westcomb Mirage (swear to god it got wetter on the inside than I felt it should and then took a long time to dry - it's for sale by the way....) in favor of purchased-on-deep-sale TREW. Of course everything else I wear I got at thrift stores.... well, except for my underpants. Can't get any smuggggerererer than that!

Stop and say hello. Look for the racecourse (duh). I'll be in grey Trew jacket and brown thrift store sessions pants sherpa-ing for two kids. Mofro will be doing the same, but, of course, will be in oversized Arc'teryx. We will both be smug as hell. Too bad scotty and Brit won't be there to join us. That would be a fuckin' smugfest!

;)

Oh yeah, bring back the Brit FTW.

I think I'm wearing the right T shirt underneath though

I wish I could have joined in the smugfest but I came down with the flu and have been projectile vomiting and pooping my pants for the last few days.
However I do feel smug about getting the flu when ski conditions are so bad.
