Snowshoe question was created by ace117
For anyone that has been up Mt Adams recently or knows for sure. How packed is the snow on the route of Mt Adams? Are snowshoes really needed? I am unfortunately only hiking it, so I will not be on skis.

had some friends do it a couple of weeks ago without snowshoes. more likely you'll want crampons and an early start.

Personally, I'd bring snowshoes just in case you find yourself postholing butt-deep at some point. It's easy to carry snowshoes and not use them--difficult to travel miles and miles on snow which won't support your weight if you're unlucky or miscalculate.
I've always preferred snowshoeing to postholing, but I've used my snowshoes just twice since I learned to ski. That must mean something.
Hope that's helpful.

what Mark said, and note that this time of year you can use the smallest, lightest snowshoes you can find/rent -- if you only double the size of your foot you'll not sink.

I just did Adams, if you do most of your hiking in the morning. No snowshoes are needed. Thanks for the info guys
