CPSC, Climb High Inc. Announce Recall of Avalanche Transceivers<br><br>The following product safety recall was conducted voluntarily by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.<br><br>Product: Mammut Barryvox Avalanche Transceivers &#8211; A device worn by backcountry skiers, and used to help locate a buried avalanche victim<br><br>Units: About 137<br><br>Manufacturer: Ascom Systec AG, Eichtal, of Switzerland<br><br>Hazard: The transceivers&#8217; plastic casing could crack, causing a malfunction if water were to enter the unit. If the transceiver fails to function properly in the aftermath of an avalanche, it could result in the buried victim not being found in time to avoid serious injury or death.<br><br>Incidents/Injuries: None Reported.<br><br>Description: The recalled Barryvoxes are 2004/2005 model Opto 3000 Avalanche Transceivers. The words, &#8220;Mammut&#8221; and &#8220;Barryvox&#8221; are printed on the front of the red and black transceivers. The serial numbers on the recalled units, which can be found in the battery compartment under the UPC code, include: M0080000 through M0088419, M0089616 through M0089800 and M0090000 through M0090419. The recalled units were shipped with an instructional CD and the box marked &#8220;Bonus CD Included.&#8221;<br>Units containing safe replacement transceivers have a red triangular label reading &#8220;New Casing&#8221; on the box.<br><br>Sold: Authorized Mammut Dealers from August 2004 through November 2004 for about $300.<br><br>Manufactured In: Switzerland<br><br>Remedy: Consumers should stop using the transceivers immediately and contact Climb High for a free replacement.<br><br>Consumer Contact: For more information, contact your Mammut dealer or call Climb High at (800) 451-5127 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. <br><br>www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PREREL/prhtml05/05527.html
