I have done the trip from the Boulder Creek trailhead (Olympic Hot Springs) to Appleton Pass and back with a pair of skis in spring, as far back as 30 years ago. I remember crossing a lot of avalanche debris -- both snow and trees -- in the upper basin before the final climb. More recently ('91), I skied an interesting extension of this tour from Appleton Pass to Cat Basin and the High Divide via the divide between Cat Creek and the Soleduck.

P.S.: The view from the Pass is worth the trip when the weather is good. The ski down is O.K. until back in the trees or debris.

I think another appeal of the Appleton Pass trip is as a possible alternate start to a spring ski trek of the Bailey Range. It would save the long car shuttle (or hitchhike) to the Soleduck trailhead. If a party is hiking out the Elwha, they would end up in the same valley as the start.
