February 24, 2017 Brighton powder

Another powder day with 6” of fresh brought the total to 47” during our 4-day ”Powder Holiday.” Plus we saw the sun for part of the time while skiing. The most difficult part of the day is getting the ski report and road status each morning. Temperatures were in the 10's, but the Little Cottonwood Canyon Rd. was closed again for awhile, affecting access to/from Alta and Snowbird. Brighton was open and all lifts were operating. From Sandy to the park and ride for the ski bus the road was snow covered and salted. The road up Big Cottonwood Canyon was the worst we have seen. 4X4s and chained vehicles had slid off the road and it was a mess, but the bus was a 40K pound machine that handled the road without a problem! We saw Art at the ticket counter and he had his backcountry gear and was ready to go. There was powder again but no competition – the lifts were deserted. Pick a line, ski untracked, and do it again. There had to be a road problem and there was! On our trip back down to the park and ride the bus driver described the road problems: half way down the road the 'up' lane was bumper to bumper with vehicles that had waited and missed the morning powder, hoping to find some powder left for the afternoon.

Art's heading north for his ski trip at Kicking Horse. We're heading south to Telleride and Crested Butte to ski with our East Coast son and 2 grandsons for 5 days. The forecast is for cold temps, sun, and cruiser days.
