Got to the mountain this morning to bluebird skies, 10 degrees, and 18 inches new.
Now for the real report: Stayed overnight at the Village Inn. Crystal Hotels are running a mid-week special for $95/night that includes the buffet breakfast at the Alpine Inn. A good deal. Got up this morning and looked out the window to see overcast skies with sun breaks. By the time we were done with our breakfast and heading out to the lifts, full-on sun. The first run down GV to Iceberg revealed no wind, warmer temps and softer snow than yesterday. Yesterday's great groomers were even better today with the softened snow. We quickly went into hamster mode hitting all the usual suspects. Valley/Berg/groomed Deerfly crazy fast. Just as good was Valley/Berg/un-groomed Lower Bull. But, the big winner was Valley/Sluiceway/Berry Patch/lower E. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Where were all the hamsters today? On one of the repeats, headed out the GV ridge to Banana Chute. Entry was fairly easy with big, carvable, oddly shaped moguls in the middle section and unconsolidated mash potatoes out the bottom into the open. Not really worth a repeat, but glad to do it today.
Around 11am, the sun gave way to overcast skies. The snow stayed soft, but by 11:30, clouds started drifting through the top of the mountain causing occasional in-and-out fog. The lower half of the mountain was still broken sun and soft snow. By 1pm, the upper mountain snow was starting to firm up and at 1:15, it started to hail. Having already blown through the CD-minimum-vert several runs prior, we decided to bail early and buy our passes for next year. By the time we changed and walked out of Guest Services with new passes, the sun was out again.
Gondie and REX ran full speed all day with no issues. I think we only rode up the bucket with a total of three people all day. However, GV is still running at 80%. Huh?????
Never made it back to yesterday's goodies in Northway...Having too much fun on the other runs to venture out.
Extremely light crowd today. A loosely packed A lot was not full. No one in C lot and only employees in B lot. Where was everyone?
For tomorrow, hope for the forecast sun or it will be frozen groomers all day.
