Who is Yuki Girl?

Monika Peters Johnson was a unique individual -- an adventurer whose humility and generous spirit endeared her to all. Born on March 25, 1970, Monika was introduced to ski mountaineering as a student of The Mountaineers. She soon became an instructor and for years introduced beginners to the sport she loved. As a physical therapist at Virginia Mason Medical Center, Monika connected with her patients at a deep level. Many of her patients became lifelong friends. After a friend died in an avalanche accident in 2002, Monika carried a tiny stuffed tiger on her ski trips to keep “Kitty” close in her thoughts. In 2007, Monika suffered a serious head injury in a bicycling accident. She fought her way back to health and strength with the same care and determination she gave to her patients. Her recovery led to her most ambitious ski adventures, including first ski descents (or first women’s ski descents) of dramatic routes on Mounts Shuksan, Stuart, Glacier, Colchuck, Tenpeak, Chikamin and Rainier. Monika’s energy and enthusiasm were legendary. Her death, from a cornice fall near Snoqualmie Pass on February 1, 2011, shocked and united the Northwest mountaineering and skiing community. The Yuki Award honors her memory.
