Chris and I (saw the snoslut, eli, and eric tumble town the hill in front of, ruining a wide swath of pow pow...) went up to Baker with the intention of skiing lift served. During our 5 runs in light and dry smoke I planted the idea in Chris that we should head BC if the weather cleared. The weather cleared, the crowds descended in bounds, we got the hell off the lifts and headed to Blueberry chutes and Little AK.
Telemetry showed 17 inches in the last 48, and all of it was cold. During the course of our three BC runs (one on the backside of the Canyon, one Blueberry, one almost AK) we set off small sluffs on 30 degree + slopes and observed 1 long 100yrd point release on 30-45 degrees, as well as several smaller 50yrd pt releases. All were unconsolidated slow moving slides that stopped when they reached slopes less than 30 degrees. One such slide knocked a rider around a bit.
Great April powder. The sun where it did hit snow more directly caused instant melt. The shade was still very cold and the smoke should linger on the protected slopes.
