Chinook Pass / Cayuse Pass
« on: 04/13/08, 12:07 PM »

Hey all,

I wanted to get the word out that the clearing of SR 123 (Cayuse Pass) and SR 410 (Chinook Pass) is now under way.  Avalanche control will begin this coming week as well.  Our crew at the WSDOT uses explosives and ski-cutting to get the avalanche work done.

It is best to avoid the slopes above and below SR 123 and SR 410, particularly in the Cayuse Pass to Chinook Pass vicinity and east of Chinook Pass.

There's lots of snow this year so I really can't get you an estimate of when they will open.  I'll put out another post in a few weeks with an update.  Updates are also available on the WSDOT web site.

Cheers,

Stimbuck

Good question, at this point we will not be working on the weekends.  I will provide an update if we do plan to be there on weekends before the pass opens.

Lots of snow over the road and in the avalanche paths.  Looks like we will get some great action when (if...) it ever warms up.

Cheers,

In case you haven't heard Cayuse Pass will open today at noon.

Snow removal and avalanche work will continue along Hwy 410 on both sides of Chinook Pass.  These activities take place Monday through Friday.  We hope to have it open by June 5.

If you are touring around 410 during the week please avoid the slopes above and below the highway due to the snow removal and avalanche work.

Thanks!

Snow is generally quite good at this time, likely the same story throughout the Cascades.  It seems that once we go to a well drained snowpack the turns get good everywhere, and the skinning isn't bad either.

On a side note:  I was at Alpental today helping with setup for the weekend and the skiing is good.  Barely a drop of rain all day, though it poured for a bit on my drive back to Ellensburg.

Cheers,

Looks like we are on track to open Chinook Pass this Thursday, June 5th.  Crews made the connection at the end of last week and are currently cleaning up the remaining snow (including parking).  There's been some road and guardrail damage from the early December avalanche/rain cycle and crews will work to repair these problems this week and into the summer.

You are a local guru!  Do you get paid to ski-cut and bomb these lines?   Cool
