This morning Allyson and i went for a quick tour just near the crest of route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway).  It was a calm, blue-bird day.  Surprisingly, we saw no other skiers in the area.  As we were enjoying our lunch at Point 9561, we soaked in the beautiful views of the lake and surrounding landscape.  At the same time, we continously giggled over how crazy it was to think that this was going to be our new backyard.  Yep, we are moving to Reno, NV, in June!!  We can hardly wait.

We descended as much as possible via sun-protected aspects to avoid the extra-soft snow.  By Virginia standards, the skiing felt like a powder day!  Before returning home to the east coast to pack for our move out west, we stuffed ourselves at a casino buffet in downtown and was robbed of $9 in less than 5 minutes by a $0.05 slot machine.

Welcome to the area Kam. Don't forget your sunscreen and be careful of those pesky casino machines. They'll get you every time

yes, it was a sweet day, but i think it took us 20 minutes to lose that 9 bucks....   ;D

Allyson & Kam,

Congratulations on your relocation to Reno.  The access to the Tahoe region is ideal.  Jill and I have spent a couple months in the Tahoe area the past 5 ski seasons. The downhill and backcountry touring options are immense and it's SUNNY.  Plus you are only a few hours away from spring skiing heaven in the Eastern Sierra.

Zap & Jill

Wow.
That is so cool!
It will be greaT! having you two back in the West.
We've missed you guys.

Awesome!  Didn't realize you guys were moving back west -- if we get down that way, Anastasia and I will give you a ring.

friends:

you are all welcome to visit and stay as long as you like.  we will be setting up shop in our new home this summer.  actually, it's more like a ski factory, right in the comfort of our own garage.  so come by, we'll custom-build some kool skis, then go turn them somewhere.

words can't describe how excited we are about transitioning west.  an opportunity came up and at first i hesitated, but a sudden slap in the face -- thanks Allyson -- set me straight.  the truth is, we can't live without close access to mountains and skiing.

anyway.  Zap, you are right.  Reno is an ideal location.  we can easily visit friends in Seattle, and just outside of our new door step will be mountains with white slippery stuff.  to the east live the Humboldt Range and friends in SLC.  a quick drive up north puts us next to volcanoes with snow in late season.  and i'm so freakin' excited about the high sierras -- wow, i can't wait to rack up the Joy-O-Meter!  so with soaring fuel costs endangering my TAY streak (and bank account), the opportunity to relocate west materialized in a timely manner.  good thing i signed on the dotted line.... ;)

Glad to hear the catapult has been launched, even if a bit South of my garage.  Don't forget your hibachi  ;)

Wow! This is fantastic! I always wondered how long you two would last in Virginia. Congratulations to both of you!

My thoughts exactly....  welcome back to the left'ern side of the continent!!    ;)

That's good news Kam and Ally,
So what is the job that you both are taking?
My sister is a Dr at the U of Reno and I look forward to visiting her and having someone to take tours with in the Sierras. As long as we keep the bush whacking to a minimum.  ;D

Good luck on your travels,
Joe

Lately we've been taking a couple of trips a year to Reno with some of our non-skier friends. We like to take a morning hike up in the hills north of town in Rancho San Rafael Park. This year being the first time we'd been there in the spring, we made it to the first snow patch. I was telling Brenda we could have easily carried our skis from the Fitzgerald to what looked like some really nice corn slopes a bit higher, and made it back before our gambling friends rolled out of bed.

We're both pretty fond of Reno and the area. You all made a good move.

Looks like a great day on the Mt Rose Hwy.  I was up on Pk 9561 two winters ago with my friend who lives in Crystal Bay.  That run is practically in his back yard.  He gets up early, puts in a lap up there, and is showered and at work by 9:00.

After living in Seattle so long (I grew up in Reno), I tend to forget how short the drives to some really good skiing are around there.

Maybe we'll bump into each other the next time I'm down for a visit...

hi all--
thanks for the well-wishes and info on the area!  i know that after two years of traveling long distances to get our turns, i will appreciate the easy access and beautiful scenery just out our back door.  i'm glad to hear that so many of you frequent the area as well--and as kam said, if any of you are passing through town, you'll always have a place to stay with us!  i look forward to having lots of ski buddies again.  :)

i found out just the other day that i got a job with the school district in reno, at a middle school where i interviewed while we were out there last.  things are falling into place!  now, if we could just sell our house in virginia... ;)
