April 6, 2008, Hwy 410/White River Road Update
« on: 04/06/08, 09:31 AM »

WASDOT has been busy on Hwy 410, and are currently pioneering/blowing out the Cayuse Pass area before dropping onto Hwy 123.  They have removed snow only on the eastbound lane from the gate at Crystal Blvd.; the westbound lane is still mostly snow covered up to the White River Road turnoff, although down low there are short sections of bare pavement.

The plan is to have Cayuse open in the third week of April, so they may start removing snow from the westbound lane at any time; we'll update as conditions change.

The White River road is plowed on the westbound lane from Hwy 410 down to the Ranger Station.  The eastbound lane is still 3-5 feet deep.  No snow removal has occurred past this point.  Two weeks ago the snowmobile route to the campground was clear and fast.
Again, we'll update conditions when snow removal ops begin past the Ranger Station.

BTW, the road into the Silver Springs snowpark is a bit deep with slushy snow, but this shoudn't keep anyone out.  Snowpark permits are no longer required (according to the WA State Parks website), the Porta-potty has been removed.

Hope this helps!

Helps a lot.  Nice to see input on this site from NPS and hope it can continue on a regular basis.  So you mean the road will open to cars to Cayuse Pass, "third week in April"?  Thanks.

No problem.

It should be said, the Cayuse opening date is subject to how snow removal proceeds and was non-specific for that reason.  With copious amounts of snow on the ground and more falling, it's hard to call at this point.

Of course, the bright side of all this is "spring" skiing into August...

As of last week, DOT has plowed both lanes of Hwy 410 beyond the north boundary gate, so snowmobile access is done for the season.

The park plans on beginning snow removal from the White River Ranger Station towards the campground this week.  It is still 5-6 feet deep at the ranger station!

Those planning on hiking/biking/skiing into either the Cayuse Pass or White River areas should be aware that park and other official vehicles will be out and about.

If snow removal ops are active, please keep clear of the area.

The tentative date for Cayuse/Hwy 123 opening to public vehicles is May 9th, but this may be delayed a few days.  Check the link below for updated info on parks roads:

Cheers!

Per DOT, Cayuse won't open tomorrow, maybe next week.
