Is Ruth Mt. a reasonable late season ski? Not looking for millions of ft. of vertical, just a nice hike, good views and even the slightest excuse to carry the skis six miles.

Actually, I would like to know if the glacier is such that this late in the season would make it not fun.

Alan

P.S. Charles, the panoramas are great! Now if I only had a monitor that was 5:1 I could then use them as my desktop!

"... I was a bit nervous about the steepness of the snow field, but the snow was mostly nice and soft ..."

Sounds about as good as it gets in August!

Hey all,

I just stumbled onto this site, but here goes:

I climbed Ruth on August 8th, and the snow was still soft but well suncupped. I saw one obvious crevasse and the beginnings of another one on the upper slopes. The glacier is so small that it wouldn't be worth the approach unless you hiked back up for multiple runs. My foot-glissade lasted about 5 minutes. This time of year the flies will drive you insane, I'm not kidding in the slightest. You will be infinitely happier if you start at sunrise and put the valley behind you quickly.

Speaking of being desperate this time of year, I'm currently living in Bellingham and also looking for some laid back snow to snowboard on, so let me know if you're still looking to ski.

-Justin
