Headed up Coquihalla Highway on Saturday to check out Needle Peak. The highway was closed for 4 days because of heavy snow and high avalanche danger so we were hoping to find untracked powder everywhere! By Sunday the avy danger went from high to considerable (alpine) and moderate (treeline and below). The weather forecast called for sun and maybe a few clouds and it was one of those days when the weatherman gets it totally wrong. Great skiing in lousy weather.
SNOW: no natural avalanches observed, dug a pit (16 Feb 2006, S facing slope, 1850 m): weak layer at 10 cm (settled but did not slide, no clear break at 16th tap) and 60 cm (did not react, we made it fail with full body weight to observe the break and again it wasn't smooth at all).
SKIING:
best snow around and especially below treeline, did 2 runs on the S slope of Needle Peak and 2 runs on E to SE slope of the bowl plus the final run skiing out to the car (best conditions in a long time, the tight tree skiing was almost easy!).
