Date: June 30, 2003 Photo Location: Manzanita Lake, 5850 ft
This photo shows the classic view of Lassen Peak from Manzanita Lake, taken after my ski descent of the West Gully (see trip report). The west side route is seen very obliquely just below the right skyline, with the gully dropping in behind the black lava flow. Eagle Peak (9222 ft) is the prominent knob at right, and the summit lot is behind the saddle separating it from Lassen. The route which we skinned up on the North Ridge almost a month earlier (see trip report) has now melted out substantially. But the west side should continue to offer an excellent ski descent with easy access back to the summit parking lot well into July (the gully past the edge of the lava flow will melt out, so a short carry will be needed near 10200 ft).
