White Pass makes a good contingency plan for gate closures at Longmire. We drove up to the Longmire Entrance of Mt Rainier Friday morning to learn that avalanche control was being done on the road and the gate would not open until 11:00 and maybe not at all that day. So we went back to Elbe and on Hwy 7 and 12 to White Pas to have a very fun day. Road conditions are updated on the recording (360 765 2223) at 5;30 AM but not always for certain on gate openings. Its good to have a back up plan!
