Four humans and one dog from the Oregon Nordic Club Columbia Gorge Chapter skied 2000' up the Tilly Jane Trail to the Gard Station. At 28 degrees F. the snow was deep and fluffy. Coverage was reasonable.
We tried to follow a snow shoe trail above the cabin (5700') but weren't sure it was taking us any place turnable very soon.  Optimistically we skinned up a couple of skiers downtrack only to find that they hadn't been very successful either. Clambering over snow covered logs on our way up made us a bit anxious. As it the sky and J's GPS grew darker, we began muttering about the location of the turnable terrain in relation to the cabin.
We humbly turned around and attempted to follow the same tracks down. This being no fun we courageously dove down on our own lines. J immediately caught a tip under a branch and ate some snow.  We found the cabin once again and S who had stayed in to hold down the fort had her up to a nice 71 degrees.
The next morning the howling wind and and warming forecast convinced us to head down the trail before we were crushed by falling trees or stuck in wet concrete. Over a foot of freshie had fallen and the skiing was great, except where it flattened out. Lucky for us Slo-Steve-who isn't really slow (see previous post)- insisted that he and his super fast puppy break trail. Our Kenosha the dog was happy to be passed.
