After having a good trip last week, I figured I would return for some more enjoyment. The weather this week was again perfect, with a S-Westerly flow and comfortable temps. The snowpack was a bit different as the new snow from earlier in the month melted off exposing the slightly bumpier surface.
There was a good hard-freeze thanks to Friday's frontal passage which made skiing these ripples a little different as opposed to smooth 'baby corn'. I was definitely sraping the top layer off which allowed for some 'solid' turns.
I was a bit earlier this time as to take advantage of firmer conditions, so the Lassen butterflies had not awaken yet, but they faithfully showed up around noon. They were flying all about the peak. I recommend coming down this way for this phenomenon.
I also did a little more route-finding to find an easier entrance! This required going around the maze of trails that are at the crater. The bonus run back down by the hiking trail was still do-able. This a basically about a third of a mile traverse with about 500' vert.
Lake Helen was again looking majestic with its hue. One gentleman in the parking lot from Redding told me it look similar to Crater Lk!
Happy trails...
