Went up to Hurricane Ridge this past Sunday for some turns. Couldnt find anyone to go with, but Id been wanting to ski the Olympic Mts for a long long time, and was really hoping to this season, so I figgrd it was time to Just Do It.
Had some rain driving thru Bremerton and Poulsbo on the way up there, but other than that no precip all day. Shortly after entering the park, I drove thru a thick fog layer starting at about 1000 but which fortunately cleared up around 4000. Weather for the rest of the day was pretty darn nice (until I drove back down into the same cloud layer that afternoon, at least) ¦ cool but not breezy; alternating clouds and sunbreaks with overall very good visibility and views.
Skied the bowl to the NE of Sunrise Point first. Got a whopping 650' vf run out of it :D, including some side-slippin thru a couple tight little gullies thru trees and over steep creeks. For the most part the snow was nice and firm, with a coupla inches of corn on top. Starting to develop some small shallow suncups... well, sun "saucers", more like it.
Then, I skinned back up to the ridge, then hiked over to the bowl to the west of Sunrise Pt (the HR ski area). Did three runs on it, about 300+ vf each, for a grand total of about 1600 vf skied!!! ;D ;D ;D
Mann I do love them Oly Mtns tho; some day I'll have to come back in winter and do some big epic tour up there...
