Justin and I climbed Mt Hood today to ski the West Crater of Hood. I've been eyeing up some of the steeper sections and drooling the last few times out.

First, the camera was in the car the whole trip :(

We left PDX at 4AM, and were on the summit a bit before 10 which seemed to be about where we wanted to be given the sun and warm temp forecast. However, mountain generated clouds were slowing the softening.

The snow was pretty firm and sun cupped. We hoped the lower headwall which receives more early sun would be better. That run is great, but the conditions were not ones to write home about. Firm sun cupped snow and a lot of exposed rocks from prior rockfall made things interesting. The snow below Crater Rock was better.

We were back in PDX around 1PM and I managed to eek out a 1/2 day of work.

In hind sight we probably needed to give the crater another hour to soften.

No matter the conditions, a day of skiing with a good\competent ski partner beats a day in the office!

That's awesome.  Oh to be able to ski and then get a half day of work in....
