Big Snow May 25

We took the trail near the end of the middle fork road. There was a little less snow than would have been ideal, because we couldn't start skinning until the lakes. This meant carrying skis through a lot of slide alder - it was actually easier going down because we were working with the direction of the branches which seem to grow in the direction of a trout skeleton. The snow was firm in morning, we left around 6:30, there was evidence of an old crust and enormous slides from earlier in the week in the gully section. We stood on top at noon and by then the snow was getting very soft. The sloughing in gully on the way down was 6 inches or more and traveled all the way to the bottom before resting, but this route doesn't get very steep so there was little danger. The day was a little hazy but there were spectacular views, Glacier mtn especially was looking good.
Thanks for letting me tag along Ron. Here are my pics.
The Middle Fork is great... :) glad to see the road is still open.
Thanks for coming on the trip Tom. It isn't easy to find people willing to put up with my time constraints and it was nice to have company, especially that knew the trail. I made it home one minute before I needed to so it all worked out great.
Phil, the road will probably be around for another couple weeks before the gate goes up. I heard June 20th from one of the road workers a couple of weeks ago. After that, the road will be a bike ride, Big snow will be skied from Dingford, or Hwy 2 like Charles did a while back, ( that actually looks like a fun route) and overcoat etc, will probably be easier from Salmon La Sac.
