Hey all, Jerry, Patti and myself finally made that trip to Hidden Lake Peak. After Jerry talked to the ranger that checks out the trails we decided to make a go of it. We parked about two miles in from the turn off and started packing. As far as parking goes it is quite limited and turning around could be tricky in a bigger rig. Does the scene in the 1st Austin Powers film with the cart in the hallway paint a picture for ya? Bring your approach shoes because from there you have 3 miles to the trailhead and then the skinning is limited up through the forest to the valley. Once in the valley we skinned to the summit.
The weather was perfect. Nice and sunny and no wind. The snow was firm and very well consolidated. Looks like most of big slides in the normal areas have come to a close. We made the summit at about 1230 and pulled the skins and headed off the back side while the front side did a little more baking. It was nice turns for a bit but the morning sun had been busy and cooked up some slush down lower in the valley. I thought it would be nice to spend the weekend and ski the backside in the mornings and the front in the afternoons. We shot back up to the summit for a quick break and off down the front side. Really nice corn was waiting and the turns were great. I could have stayed all day! The weather was just starting to blow in a bit and we were blowin out. Back down to the valley where the corn is sticky and back to the trailhead. We were all alone today and the views on this tour are as good as they get. Ahhhh! Pure solitude in the outback. Kind of a rare thing these days.
Well back on with the approach shoes and packin out. When we made it back to the car we had a flat tire. Arrrgggg! Off with the old and on with the doughnut. Gotta love those for the off road! Made it in to Marblemount hoping to get the tire fixed ,but , no deal. There are no services for that stuff. The Chevron had a plug kit and a ton of other stuff for emergencies if you ever need anything. Popped in the plug aired it up and back on the road with the doughnut back in the trunk. Thanks Jon(owner of the Chevron and the Shell) for having all the right stuff at the store you are a life saver.
That's all folks! Here are the pics: http://climbingjay.smugmug.com/gallery/2839687
