A 7:45 start from Hwy. 20 allowed us to boot-hike the first mile or so up Silver Star Creek. Skins brought us to the mid-slope above the 5000 ft. lower valley as we began to experience some old powder with occasional firm crust. Mostly blue skies and the granite spires of Vasiliki Ridge made our ascent a joy. The route up Silver Star Creek has to be one of the most hassle free tours in the area, with the open, easy to negotiate forest of the lower creek and the straight-forward route finding up higher. I did find my skis sliding-out of a traverse at times--the 2 inches of cold snow had little adhesion to the base if I pushed too much.
Our descent from an 8000 ft. plus saddle has a few hidden rough spots, but was overall fine skiing. As expected, the lower valley gave us some very nice corn skiing, especially the clearings on the east side of the creek, 20 descent minutes above the highway. This route should remain skiable to the road for some time yet.
