Visited NE OR over spring break. Started with a few days in the Wallawas - beautiful area around Enterprise/Joseph. We intended to camp at the Salt Creek Summit, but cold temps kept us at the Ponderosa motel in Enterprise. We hit the cross-country trail to Big Sheep the first day, snow was gone down low on sun exposed slopes, but we managed to find a way on fingers of snow in places. It looked good up higher on the peaks.

We finished the trip with a couple days around the Anthony Lake ski area in the Elkhorns (SW of LaGrande off of I84). Snow was variable - from a few inches of new powder, to ice on steeper exposed slopes. We skinned up the ski area slopes (only open weekends now) to the ridge which we followed to the summit of Lees Pk. We skied the N couloir, which was powder skiers left, ice on the right, improving on the lower slopes.

After a night in Baker City, and an excellent meal at Barley Brown's Brew Pub, we returned for a fun day on the nice groomed cross-country trails around the lakes.

Great area, few people, tons of potential - would love to return for some powder skiing mid winter.

First picture shows the shot we skied on Lees Pk (on right) from the ridge.
Sounds nice.  Good to hear of some other areas around the Wallowas.  Do you recommend the Anthony Lakes area for some more BC tours?

Telemack,

Yes, there is a lot of potential for great tours in the Elkhorns and Wallawas. Here is a shot of Gunsight Pk with a nice looking 1,000 ft. north face, about a mile from Anthony Lake ski area, the steep couloir at the top looks like a good challenge. There are also many open ridges in the south of the range that we didn't check out.
