Low expectations lead to pleasant surprises was the group's conclusion at the end of the day.
The base, which appears to be at least 3 meters in the creek cuts, was frozen rock hard, and it was covered with about .75" of light fresh stuff. In the trees, the snow was bumpy and skinning was difficult. One member of our group bemoaned the fact that his ski crampons were safe and sound in his basement rather than in his pack.
We skied the 1,000 ft open run from the SE ridge of Kendall down into the woods 4 times. The lower angled bottom 700-800 ft of the run were excellent for high-speed cruising. Wide open and smooth slope, hard base, and 1-2" fresh on top - felt just like skiing the groomers, only without the crowds.
Let's hope the snow keeps falling and bonds well to this icy base.
