Originally my partner Chris and I were planning on doing an overnight to ski Thomson and Alaska this weekend, but when we got to the pass and sat in the rain and thick clouds for an hour we decided we'd be better off just doing a day trip. We threw a few ideas back and forth and settled on Lundin Pk. We followed the Commonwealth Basin trail up past Red Mountain making decent time and eventually found ourselves at the bottom of the snow slope leading to Lundin. Visibility was poor, but the snow looked passable. We continued to the col between the main peak of Lundin and the false summits to the east and stashed our skis.
The rock on Lundin was completely snow covered which made scrambling very challenging. We carried a light rack, a 30m rope, and a few slings. We ended up belaying the 4th class step in the middle of the route since it was pretty sketchy: no good handholds, sloping feet and snow obscuring everything. After reaching the summit we rappelled most of the route using the rappel station and those giant eyesore bolts.
The ski down was decent at top, but became progressively slushier as we descended. The gully was covered in most places with avalanche debris, presumably from earlier in the week, but there was often enough smooth snow on the sides to make good turns. Fun trip with a mountaineering flair!
