A group of optimists and I had a good tour up Lichtenberg Mtn. this past Saturday. We were skinning up Smith Brook Rd. by 9 a.m. and gained the ridge to Lichtenwasser Lake (approx 4,900ft) by 11:30. The visibility was great with even a few sun breaks. Go figure? We took in some great views of some good looking lines off Jove Peak and Union Peak as we gained the ridge.
We saw the dreaded Pineapple Express coming around noon from the NW. While preparing for a drenching, we were all thrilled when is started snow. It snowed, heavily at times, while we gained the ridge and ended our tour a couple 100 meters from the summit (approx. 5,800ft).
The snow was heavy, thick and crusty, as was expected. Yet the trip was worth viewing some magnificent cornices at the headwall above the lake. We rode the ridge down, retracing our uptracks. With the right conditions there looks to be a many good aspects and terrain to ride in this area. We got back to the cars just as the Express started to let loose, and wondered what all those people were doing camping in this weather. Now I know.
