The day was beautiful. Unfortunately, the snow was not. At around 4700-5000-ish feet, the ice inducing effects of those pesky NW winds could really be felt. We stopped climbing well short of the summit, since the work to reward ratio was weighted heavily on the work side of the equation. The ski down from the upper-middle part of the face started out rather icy but turned out ok after only a little suffering. The bobsled course through Commonwealth was treacherous yet strangely enjoyable.
There were about 1.5 million snowshoers swarming about Red and environs, which was interesting to see.

Was planning on hitting Red Mtn tomorrow, so am wondering what time you were doing your skiing down the face today and whether you thought it would have gotten better at any point.

It softened below 5000 by 12, but a northerly wind kept it bulletproof above. I doubt the top 500 feet ever got soft, though I could be wrong.
