After spending the past week trying to comfort myself with the more continental snowpack around
was truly spectacular. The terrain here is pretty variable, with numerous steep gullies, exposed massive boulders, but all in all very enjoyable ski terrain. Did I mention the weather? It was perfect. And the snow was quite different, and much more stable, from just 20 miles up the road...
Sunday a larger group decided to head further up the pass for deeper, and fresher, snow. We opted for Arrowhead. With the recent reports of a pretty unstable snowpack we were pretty cautious, with a complete understanding that we may be skiing the trees from the summit. This is basically what we did, until the lower section where things opened up a bit. There were definitely signs of instability and I think everyone kicked off some pretty minor, but attention-getting slabs...which was enough to not really mess around. All in all though the snow was fantastic and deep.
