Crystal BC Beta
« on: 12/01/06, 05:58 PM »

First post here, but I've been a member for a bit. Recently moved out to Montesano, WA from Salida, CO.

I am looking for beta on the Crystal BC and BC on the Oly Peninsula. I'd rather not hash through the old reports. Also, I'am looking for a partner or two who likes steeps, who will not have a problem skinning for a while to get to spots, has excellent avi skills, and enjoys a little whiskey.

General suggestions are fine if you don't want to give too detailed of an answer. Will happily trade CO beta to secret stashes if you have a trip planned out there.

Replies to this post can be made by pm or emails to buzzard23@gmail.com.

Thanks.

I had lots of questions about this last year - I am glad to share with every one what I learned  Grin

Patrol bombs Crystal BC for avi but it is still considered real BC. You should know the conditions, have your avi training, a partner, beacon shovel probe etc.  You are responsible for your own safety. You have been reading experiences of last weekend - it IS wild out there - people have died there too (check the old NWAC avi reports).

At days end, the patrol does a sweep out there to get straglers. I saw them do a courtesy ride for a beginner skier who ended up on Puckers one evening - pretty funny - probably had never been off the groomers before.

CMAC (the crystal ski team) sells photo BC map that you can purchase at guest services - you can purchase a single lift pass too if you show them your backcountry gear (tele/ATboots/beacon/shovel).

It is public land, you may skin all the way to mountain top.  Do not endanger others - the skier's code applies to everyone and patrol will hold you to that - they can call the sherif if they need to.  It is common sense, make your path in the woods out of way of skiiers, or up the side of a big open run like Quicksilver where the skiers can see you BEFORE they enter the run.

Forest Service gave patrol authority to close areas when they are bombing or grooming or doing other dangerous maintenance.  Lift riders are not allowed to ski Kempers - agreement between resort and national park - I still dont understand that.  I am not sure they can enforce that with the backcountry travelers though - ask Joe Da Baker about that.  There are plenty of other great places to ski anyway!

If you are touring outside the patroled areas - you can check out at the ski patrol office. There you can make sure you are not going into a closed area - you can check for current wx/avi info - and if you dont come back - they can notify sherif to look for you (patrol helps with rescue too if they have the resources).  I think you have to pay $$$ for any helo rescue...

There - that is all I know.

I wish I were out there skiing - but I am doing my "mom" job today.

Mt. Ellinor is a close place to start from Montesano in the Olympics; road accessibility varies in the winter.  Hurricane Ridge is the simplest spot for short quick tours, but is a bit of a trek from where you are.
Try the new Climbers Guide to the Olympic Mountains for some written info. on skiing.

Thanks for the replies. I'll need a partner for this coming weekend. I would rather avoid ski area B/C if anyone is game.

You gottabe kiddin me.  I figured I was the only person from Monte on this site.  I'm 29 - avy level II, skiing since 3, ex-instructor, rando for the last 6 years, heli-skiing a few times, and love whiskey and a little smoke (wink wink nudge nudge).  Give me a call - I'm not afraid to hike and looking for a few new faces on the hill. 3100608 - Gavin

Just read the rest of the posts - Ellinor is worthy, buts its a long approach for a run that may not happen since conditions can be sketchy in the Chute.  Crystal is the the bomb - but save it till its pukin (you don't want to be in the BC then anyway) and pay for the pass - you can lap the outback all day (think lift serviced heli-skiing).  I have some ideas about good trips in the Olympics and National Forest and sleds to access them.  If they get the roads fixed to Paradise, you can almost always find something good at RAINier.  Its a given that you have to drive awhile from Monte, so you might as well leave early and go where its good.

Kempers is closed because of blasting policies with the National Park a few years ago ski patrol was bombing kempers and it slid taking the patroler with it according to another patroler you could here trees snapping like branches on the patrolers radio and with cooperation for the tram up at Crystal it was agreed NO BLASTING IN MRNP
