June 24, 2006--Colchuck Glacier

The skiing on the Colchuck Glacier was still good this last Saturday, although the recent hot weather exposed the last few hundred feet of boulders on the western-most descent line. The surface near the col was soft for the first inch or so, a velvet-like surface that was reassuring. A few cups were forming by mid-slope--no more velvet--but still fun. I have to admit the last few hundred feet were a little ragged, but for the end of June I was happy. Admittedly it would have been better a week or so earlier. The eastern edge--next to Dragontail--still has continuous snow to the lake.
Thanks for the report, Chester. Welcome to turns-all-year!
