Spent the night at 5750 feet just outside the south entrance to Lassen Volcanic Park. The overnight low was in the high 50s, and we knew that things would probably be soft again. Drove the 4 miles into the south entrance at 6:45am and were anticipating seeing the new Visitor Center under construction €“ nope.  The old ski chalet has been removed, but there is only a large snow pile in its place. The road is open up to Sulphur Works at 6935 feet where it is gated. There was no one else in the parking area.  Guess everyone€™s working.:)  We planned a short tour to Ridge Lake Peak which is visible to the west from the parking area.  We skinned on the lookers€™ right side of the stream for about 1000 feet elevation gain until we broke out at the lake at the base of RL Peak.  The ski ascent and descent of Ridge Lake Peak are straightforward. You ascend the ridge between Ridge Lake and Mt. Diller which is lookers€™ right.  The steep south facing slope of Mt. Diller looked very inviting, but we continued up to RLP.  The skinning was fast on a firm snow pack which was encouraging. We ascended the ridge and traversed left to the summit of Ridge Lake Peak at 8600 feet.  Great views of the north face of Brokeoff, the west slopes of Ridge and Diller, Diamond Peak and the beauty of the south side of Lassen.  Our descent route was the 40 degree NE face. The slope has a slight rollover but conditions were stable and quite enjoyable, with about 2€ of ski penetration and a few donuts as we neared the lake.  OK conditions but not the classic Sierra corn.  The ski out to the camper was a bit soft, but better than on our previous days.  Spoke to a ranger about the road opening and he said 4th of July, although the road is cleared to Emerald Lake.  As for the new Visitor Center, the budget was cut by two thirds for various reasons, and they are now accepting new bids.  The new projected opening is October 2008.  Time to head to the north side of Lassen.
