(Another group of TAY'ers was scheduled to arrive at the hut right after us.  I hope you have a good one!)
Thanks Lowell.  And a good one we did have!
I started this post adding on to your thread, but then I started feeling like a thread hijacker so I moved it.
On Saturday while you were doing your circuit of the mountain some of us early arrivers did a run form the top of the Palmer (8500) down to Government Camp (+-3900).
As you pointed out, we checked into the Silcox right behind your departure on Sunday and enjoyed the inclement weather with a sumptuous meal and the luxury of the Silcox ambiance and friends, some of which we hadn't seen since the same trip last year.
For climb day (Monday) we split up into groups with different motivations;  the hard core summiters set out for another summit to bag, which they did in spite of the wind and less than ideal skiing on the descent.  They enjoyed much deserved kudos at day's end and were the only ones to earn summit certificates for the trip.  Mark Tomko, one of the summiters, posted photos here.  Nice photos and Display, Mark.

Those of us that were less summit motivated also had a great day lift skiing in the trees and topped it off with another run down to Govy.  We, of course had to stay another night at the Silcox and brag about our day's conquests amidst even better food, better (and more) booze, better friends and Jerry White ski porn on the Big Screen.  :D

Nothing begins the climbing season like a trip to the Silcox (this mountaineering thing is tough for old people, though).
We'll likely get more photos up as time goes on.
Added 20 more shots after Jeanette's photos here.
Edit to add photos & link.
This was the 9th year that we have done the Mt Hood, Silcox, May trip, and this one was one of the best.  It felt just like old home week and was a wonderful way to reunite with all of our friends from past trips :D.  There were happy smiles all around with everyone getting to enjoy their own level of participation throughout our stay.  The Silcox Hut, with it's ambiance is truly wonderful place to spend time with friends :D.

(I'll have some additional photos to post later).

The photo of "Wackiness Ensues" seems to capture the essence of the gathering.  Hard to believe you can still have that much fun and it is still legal. :)

Some additional, Mt Hood, Silcox, and skiing photos :D.

Sounds like a nice trip.  Too bad for me, nobody took up my offer ;)

Save me a spot two years from now if you would.

It seemed like I was hearing some reports of mishaps on Hood around the time you all were there.  Did you witness any of the accidents?  Is the bergschrund gaping?

Surely a vid. from JW is pending?

Did anybody find my bottle of Scotch from last year? IT's good to know that as long as the Silcox is there the Wild hearts will be too. I'm enjoying the pictures keep em coming.

No, we didn't see any accidents. The fall on the Reid Glacier sounded nasty, but I think that was on Saturday or Sunday. We climbed Monday and had the whole mountain to ourselves. We didn't see anyone else out there. I think people might have been scared off by the high winds, but the conditions were great for booting and cramponing. Yes, it was terrible skiing, but for me it was the first time I've been to the top of one of the volcanoes and been able to see anything.

Crossing the bergschrund on crest of the Hogsback ridge was pretty easy. It was about a foot wide at that point with a pretty solid looking bridge. I'm not sure how long that will last. But on either side of the ridge crest, it was gaping. I heard that an unfortunate snowboarder opened up one side. It sure made the skiing interesting on the way down!

Yeah, Robie, there was a bottle of scotch, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the same one. ;) Can't wait to see the video from JW and Dan.

Thanks everyone for another great Silcox trip!

For those questioning the 'Schrund status, Mark got a pretty good shot of it as of Monday 5/8:

Thanks for the photos, Ron, Mark and Jeanette.  Although I failed to keep up with the assembled crowd in any of the standard categories (e.g., drinking, talking trash, skiing), I did manage a standout performance in the napping and gluttony competitions.  Fun times and good people.

nice pics, everyone--looks like it was a blast!  8)
