March 18 & 19, 2006, Jove Pk

After much hemming and hawing about where to go...Nick, Doug, Eric, and I finally decided on skiing Jove Pk for an overnighter this weekend.  It turned out to be a great choice.

Our goal being to have an overnighter outing not too epic, dig some snow holes, and get some turns.  We threw in a summit because it was there.
Saturday, we camped just over the "Rainy Pass" that Smith-Brook road goes through.
There were a few other skiiers grabbing lines here and there.  It had kinda fluffed snow all day, and the sun only shined through for little bits.

We found some great Northwest facing well spaced tree slopes and got a nice long run in before dark.  The snow was great, nice and fluffy.

Sunday morning, we traversed around the ridge to the base of Jove.
We pretty much followed the guidebook route up Jove, staying in the trees completely until gaining the East Ridge.  A little boot packing to get the summit.

We skiied the pretty much skiier left side of the South face around noon.  We had some concern about the melting and soft slurry slides that would result.  The south side of Jove had about 4 inches of fluff insulating a windblown crust, as we got down a ways we were setting off some small slurries and pinwheels but kept on the edge of the slope and everything held together fine.  Very spring like, nice long run, sorta corn.

On the traverse back to our camp, Doug wouldn't let us pass up a nice knee deep powder run on a N facing slope for a short detour.  We went back to our camp, grabbed our gear, jumped over the pass and skiied the large old growth trees down to the Smith Brook road, avoiding the open wet slopes.  Followed by a glide out on the road.

Just a great weekend, great snow and awesome weather on Sunday.
