Really wanted to scale Alpental but changed my mind once got a look at the lack of snow. I am sure upper and lower I would have been good but a friend of mine indicated that the flat run of lower I was terrible and did not want to venture our solo. Ended up a the base of Silver Fir chair and decided to give it a go. Followed and existing skin track that was nicely set. Lots of folks on the hill including and avy class with about 10 participants. At the top there was about 5 to 6 inches of consolidated new on a firm base. I skied down the east face which was much better than I anticipated. The snow was playful but care had to be taken because of a lot of holes. Managed to get down to the base on mostly fresh snow and made it back home to set the Hawk game. Skis intact with no gouges.
Still need a couple of feet to open but lots of folks out to play today.
Went to pick up our passes and asked about the conditions on top. I was told that you could no longer tour up the slopes unless they were open and you reported to the patrol. Any truth to this? I though Alpental was good early season until we doing control work which was typically posted on TAY

That's the policy I know, too.
Nobody is going to force you to turn around, but they'll probably say something and leave it up to you to comply. At least that's how it was previous years.
