I started to respond to telemac's 11/26 Stevens report and I realized I feel like they deserve a full blown compliment for their pre-season open hill policy.
Stevens' policy before the lifts open is so friendly! They welcome everyone. I saw families letting their kids touch snow, skiers and sledders everywhere, dogs, and Pass employees smiling and waving at the visitors. Every time I go to Stevens Pass pre-season it makes me feel like spending money there. I've had countless great days at Stevens before the lifts open. My buddy Ben took this photo of me on Novemeber 16, 2013, I think the BEST pre-season day I ever had...
And on that day, I remember Bill Bourton, Mountain Manager, was shoveling the steps. He was curious about where we were headed and told us to have fun. Awesome.
I skied at Stevens on Saturday on new big skis. Oh boy were they the ticket! Pretty tough trail breaking conditions, and these new fatties were fantastic on the up. They made the down just effortless. I skied that pitch from the top of Hogs toward Barrier, it was smooth. Hogs back to the car was better than two weeks ago with the new snow, no rocks, and could ski the whole way. I didn't brave any steeps. It would have been great snow for steep skiing if there was a base. I'm an advocate of skiing on your biggest skis early season.

Excellent. I'm an advocate for using your most beat-up skis in early season ::)
Those throwback photos always make me jealous (until I see that they are not recent. :) ) We had great easy skinning up a well set trak via Tye Mill to the patrol hut Saturday. Then nice 16†bottomless powder over brush and rocks to the base of Jupiter chair. Back down the front side we found skier compacted and cat packed smooth slopes with no scratching. Hope today's warmup firms the base and doesn't melt it all.
All skis are rock skis eventually. Saturday's conditions provided great practice at skiing centered.
