I contacted Cascade Backcountry Alliance and suggest you do so as well. This is exactly the kind of thing having a backcountry advocacy group is for.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your emails. There is a dogpile of comments on the WSDOT site (where we commented as well, but it seems like they might have closed the thread) and the more voices the better- please go speak up. They have obviously gotten a pretty strong response and have agreed to hold off on closing the gate further west until January 2nd. We will be sticking up for the interests of winter recreation on highway 20 in a few ways- contacting the WSDOT transportation secretary, appropriate local representatives, and trying to rally various user groups together. Will keep everyone here posted if we hear anything back, as well as if we find a productive avenue of complaint.

Thanks,
Conrad

We've been trying to work with the sled group Northwest Glacier Cruisers to get somewhere with the DOT. Here's a recent email from them:

"We have asked the DOT to set up a meeting to discuss the Closure of Highway 20. They wanted to do it at our snowmobile club meeting but we felt it was important to include all users, so once they have given us a date I will let you know and we would love for a representative from your group to be there to discuss this with them. Not sure they will change their mind, but they are asking for an opportunity to explain it to us.   We want very much to do this in partnership with all the users motorized and non motorized."

We will let folks know what's needed once we hear more.

Thanks,
Conrad

Well?  Contrary to their website (said closed at MP 134), WSDOT had the road closed at Colonial Creek CG this past weekend.   Email sent....

Meager, probably about 1-1.5 feet in the trees next to the highway.  It didn't get very deep until 3500'.

And 20 will stay closed at the CG until they start clearing the highway, per WSDOT's Jeff Adamson.  If you are unhappy with this decision he said to contact the Sedro Woolley Maintenance Facility (who did the cost/benefit analysis that resulted in this year's Colonial CG closure).  It won't do any good this year to complain Jeff said, but it might factor in for next year's planning.

Emphasis on might.  Basically, I think, it was a polite way of telling me to buzz off.

There was zero public input on this decision. When their blog post went up about it and got slammed with comments, they said "we hear you."  I understand that sometimes the right people are not aligned for a project or decision to be nimble. We need to squeak, and squeak loudly in many forums, if we want this changed back.

The loss of ruby as a backcountry destination could not come at a worse time in the explosion of use we are currently seeing in this sport.
