TAY in Faribanks? was created by Calvin
I just moved up to Fairbanks AK for graduate school and I am hoping to keep the TAY going. I have about 4 years under my belt and it would be a shame to break the streak. Obviously winter and spring are no problem, I could get turns out my door, the problem I foresee is mid summer where permanent snow is plentiful but much less accessible than the cascade volcanoes.
I'm looking for stoke and any advice from people who have lived and skied in the interior.
If all goes well Ill be able to get a few AK TRs up here.

Do the pilots out of Talkeetna let people fly standby at lower cost?

The summit lake area had glaciers accessable from the hiway during the 70s I used to ski on . Hopefully theres something left. Check in at the Harley-Polaris shop . ask for Chuckie or Hadad .. tell them #33 says hi. X

I flew into the Kahiltna glacier basecamp with Denali-bound friends ~10 days ago. Sheldon Air Service charged me $200 for the flight in and out with some time on the mountain. The boys paid $500 round trip with all of their kit.Do the pilots out of Talkeetna let people fly standby at lower cost?

Hey all,
Thanks for the information! I have since been able to get some turns on the north slope of the Brooks, in an afternoon after work. Ill try to get a TR up shortly.

Hard to imagine that the Brooks Range is within "after work" range of UAF, even allowing for uninterrupted sunlight (and bush planes).

Thanks for the tree pic. Great flashback .It was quite a bit smaller in 1977 ! I worked 2 years @ Chandalar Camp and Atigun Pass. Was an incredible experience. There was good XC and steep slope skiing all around us . You had to dodge 10 grizzlies at times just to get back to the barracks ! I have a slide of that tree I'm going to look for . Thanks !   X.

Haha yeah 8 hours up the haul road would be tricky. I was doing my work this summer up at the Toolik field station, just north of Atigun pass. Plenty close for a few after work turns in the bright evening sun.
