With
, we decided to head somewhere flat for a few hours today, mixing companion-rescue practice with a walk in the woods.
One of us had never been up the Gold Creek drainage, and the other hadn't been in more than a decade. It's still flat. Traveled elevations between 2520' and 2620'.
Weather: Light precip, mostly liquid, with the occasional frozen particle mixed in. Cloudy skies, calm winds.
Snowpack: 80 cm of Washington's signature base material. 2-4 cm of wet spackle atop a partially-ski-supportable wet crust. A second crust just below for good measure. Lots of soggy ~1F below.
Avalanche: No instability noted.
Travel conditions: Crust was soft/wet enough to be edgeable at pass level.
