Which Beacon Basins/Parks are currently operating?
« on: 01/05/18, 12:13 PM »

Saturday is looking like a great day to practice companion rescue. Which beacon parks are operational?

Susan's TAY-FB thread from 12/14 suggests that Stevens' park was open, but Alpental's was off. Is that still correct?

Thanks!

Even if the one at Alpental was running, you'd have a hard time probing through all the ice in the upper snowpack to hit the targets

do you mean Avalanche transceiver parks? A beacon only transmits a radio signal where as a transceiver both transmits and receives a radio signal.

It's an important distinction because when you're doing a search for a buried Avalanche victim it's important that other members of the party turn off their transmission signal so as to not confuse the search.

I know that you know that and that for some reason we've adopted the use of the slang word Beacon for Avalanche transceiver.

And it is true that all the buried Avalanche transceivers in a park will be set to transmit, however it's important to understand the difference and how radio signal waves move through the environment.

two sets of principles. They are the principles of power and privilege and the principles of truth and justice. If you pursue truth and justice it will always mean a diminution of power and privilege. If you pursue power and privilege, it will always be at the expense of truth and justice

Alpental is running, but only 2 pads are operational at this time. The ice is bad. We'll be working on the site this week to get more pads going and at least break up the ice around them.

@FHNC-'the Beacon Training Park is a system created to make it easier to practice with your transceiver. It features six permanently buried transmitters wired to a central control panel. To change the scenario, you can just flick the on/off switches on the control panel. '
Here are the current locations of WA State Beacon Basins/Training Parks:
Mission Ridge-https://www.missionridge.com/avalanche-beacon-park
Crystal Mountain-https://www.crystalmountainresort.com/the-mountain/mountain-
Alpental- http://www.summitatsnoqualmie.com/mountains/safety/beacon-basinsafety/avalanche-safety/
Stevens Pass(not on the website)
Not sure about Mt Baker.
