Damn; quality DOES matter was created by dfhkvs
Spent the weekend camping at FiveMile Butte Fire Lookout (east side Mt. Hood) with the kid for a 12th birthday. Had an ornithologist friend along with his Swarovski binoculars.

We could EASILY see the boot track up Snow Dome / Sunshine Route and the ski traverse from Cooper Spur to Hood Meadows (10 miles).

We could also see the butt glissade path down South Route on Adams (50 miles). Couldn't quite spot our sweet turns in the SW Chutes from two days ago, however...

Incredible what $3000 of high quality optics can do. That glissade chute is, what, 18" wide?

Dave.

If you are ever in one of the Iowa class museum ships and get the chance... take a look through some of those optics. I don't remember seeing the director stations with the primary gear, but the secondary glass in the 16 inch turrets was still amazing. And that stuff is old...

On a related note... is this too heavy/overkill for ski tours? :) Ahhhhh I want...
