Crystal - 04/08

Short report – Another better or worse or good enough or a day on snow kinda day…and after some poking around I managed to find enough hamster happy places to make it a very good day.

Lots of words report - Arrived extra early since it was a Saturday after a basically closed day and the report said 8” new or so and I hadn’t been on snow since Tuesday….I was aware of the winds yesterday…it was a little mentally challenging early – kinda fuzzy on the vis, places I thought might be good were not, other places I expected to be nasty were actually nasty…but it snowed most of the day which improved many places, vis got better which made the expected places very happy….PB, GV Bowl (and most of the rest of GV).  BP’s early was not so good as expected, but heard later that it had improved.  Did Memorial Forest – work out early, better later but still a challenge.  Did PB a few times after watching “Eddy” make it look nice – it was.  Biggest lines were on FQex and HC so I spent many happy turns late morning in the Valley – main bowl, Grubstake Trees and Grubstake, Ann’s (!) and Dan’s lines down low, Snort Elk bowl and my fav line over there on the shoulder skiers right dropping to the base of GV Chair.  Lots of fast skiing, stayed off the groomers after the first few runs.  Very light crowd on the slopes which is sad since it will cause Crystal to limit operations and shut down way to early this season. Ended up being a fun day and the Coomba’s were even happier than my brain. (they were the ticket heli skiing last weekend also).

Other – Passed through a damaged CB lodge (main entrance got hammered by yesterday storm), soup was Triple C (didn’t have any).  Pay lot was weekend sized and most every day empty, C lot maybe ¾ full, B half full…so there were a few people around.

Other other – Crystal has posted their operations schedule to the last day on the snow conditions page….makes me very sad…but makes it look like Blackcomb will be soon.

We did four laps out hamburger way right after chair six opened. It was mostly good but you could find some heart stuff underneath the new. It was still a lot of fun, After the fourth lap the line on six got pretty big so we had headed for powder bowl skiers right. Visibility was a bit challenging but the snow was good.  Off to green valley where West Face was very nice. Snorting elk bowl was good. A lot of the sneaky places i skied very well. We did one in the doors which was just a bit too scrapy and crunchy. Lucky Shot trees were good.  We get a couple more laps in Powder Bowl and the FQ line wasn't bad at all. The new snow did provide a bit of free refills. A few sun breaks here and there. A bit of white out here and there. There was a very good band playing on the umbrella porch, and the beer tasted great. A real bonus day.
