We played on some slopes around Jim Hill yesterday. Hit some south aspect first and shady 2nd. Words of the day were: variable and fun.
Depths in this profile varied based on wind transport, elevation, and aspect; but in general:
2 to 8" uncohesive new powder, over:
1.5 cm crust (sometimes supportive, sometimes carveable, sometimes absent), over:
4 to 6" facetting powder: cleared off Sat night apparently this far east of the crest, over:
supportive thick rain soaked layer. No reason to dig below this.
Sun warmed south aspect skied nicely down to 4500 then got deeper and mushy.
Sought wind deposited snow on shady aspects to float on the thin crust.
Dodged many tree bombs and avy debris throughout the day.
Overall, great day to be out in them thar hills.
A pic of sun and shade:
