Sol duc in march and Shasta in may or June
« on: 02/14/17, 06:00 PM »

Daydreaming about the upcoming weekends;

In march or as soon as they open the road I am looking to get back into the sol duc area. Perhaps some variation of the high divide loop with a bogachiel and Appleton summit thrown in conditions permitting.

Also love to do Shasta hotlum wintun in may or June

Anyway thought I would throw these out there early to see if there is any interest

Cheers

The olympics loop looks intriguing. How much time would you plan for that?

At this point I am thinking it would be best as an overnight. Later in the year with more sunlight a strong party might pull it off in a day. I have explored bogachiel and Appleton but the back of the cirque may have some discovery. I prefer going into deer lake and exiting via Appleton in order ski that exposed  shoulder but am happy to consider alternatives. It has the look of a classic tour but there may be dragons.

Hi Ron, Mike Happyrock here, been following the posts. Are you looking to make this adventure happen up at the sol Duc, maybe April/may?

Hey Mike,

The trip is still brewing. Road looks to be open before 24th. If before means this week then it is more down to the weather for me. Things are still looking a bit wintery up there which although good for turns would make travel more involved and visibility tougher.

I think schedule wise we had conflicts on the first so if not this weekend (low prob) then next (weather dependent), if not those times I would be looking at first clear weekend after April fools.

If you're interested send me a pm with contact info.

Hi Ron, Mike here. I'm sorry I haven't replied till now. Unfortunately I must have overlooked the e mail replying from TAY. I am curious about the sol Duc trip. Have you ever done it before? My brother has land on the Sol Duc that he is building a cabin on. I would really like to explore that trip sometime.

Fun skiing last weekend and now the rain has me daydreaming about future trips. I can't think of a good reason not to just repeat this years fun. This time I will likely go for the sol duc trip in the opposite direction in order to increasethe likelyhood of an Appleton summit. Also looking to skip some of the back of the traverse and go more directly toward Bogachiel afterward. I will start watching the road and weather situation in march again and go from there...

As far as Shasta, probably won't get enuf days off in a row to add Lassen this year but I am looking forward to bombing down there for another run on the HW.

Let me know if you are interested in reserving a seatbelt this spring.

Hey Ron,

You would want to do the lake basin loop?  That sounds like a blast.   Early spring sort of thing?

That's the idea with variations for where the snow cover makes travel more appealing. March a couple seasons ago had me skinning at canyon creek. This last spring we were at Deer lake before we started skiing. If conditions allow earlier access it might be possible to climb the ridge to Appleton a bit earlier. If later, it might make sense to stay a little higher than the bridge creek trail to avoid bushwhacking.

Hi Ron,

Hotlum Wintun Ridge looks awesome, how many days are you thinking including travel?

Hey Nick, 3 ish days? More if I can get it. I prefer doing the climb in a day to avoid overnight stuff but would consider going up part of the way.
