I headed out with a large group of mountaineers today for the basic manuevers field trip that was part of the ski/snowboard mountaineering class that I began last year.  The day was sunny, gusty and oh so very cold.  The basin being protected from the sun contained mostly wind packed snow!  It was mighty tasty.  Grin  We dug some pits, did some transceiver practive drills, and built some emergency bivies.    The pits revealed a few ice layers, but we didn't get anything to slide.  The snowpack was pretty solid.  A fine day out.    My only complaint might be is that we could have had a few more turns that and frozen courderoy is very bumpy!  *bounce*
