4/8/16 Sherman Pk, Baker S side conditions report
« on: 04/09/16, 09:28 PM »

It looks like folks have been enjoying some great trips lately. But Iíve not seen anything recent from Mt Baker's south side Ö so here goes my report.

You can drive to within about 1.5 miles of the trailhead. At the trailhead there is plenty of snow so my son in law and I opted for a direct ridge approach on the Scott Paul Trail side that leads eventually to the Squak Glacier. The hot weather did not allow for any overnight refreeze of snow till we got in some wind around Craig View (appox 6,500 ft). The Squak is filled in and was mostly smooth this day. We opted for bagging Sherman Peak this time since neither of us had been there before. Skiing down at 3pm was good to about Craig View, then it was spring mank afterwards. Sleds enjoyed the lower mountain mostly and started later in the day so we felt mountain solitude until the car.

It is good access and conditions right now. However, itís still a long day at 7,600 ft. of vertical and nearly 16 miles round trip to Sherman (slightly further to Bakerís summit).

the year 2030?

I think Seattle lightrail will get up to Heliotrope trailhead before that road gets fixed. How dope would that be? meet at northgate PNR and get on the train bound for the TH.

we climbed via the easton yesterday. the route is still very clean at this point and given your comfortability with glacier travel can be done sans rope.

the roman wall was still very icy when we dropped in around 1230.
