March 26, Herman Saddle + Bagley Basin

A clear forecast and the promise of deep powder had us up well before dawn and heading for the Baker backcountry with the plan to ski Herman saddle. The conditions we found were not at all as expected - mostly very hard refrozen snow. The hard surface did make for fast and easy skinning, and allowed us to make good time to the saddle. We skied southwest aspects toward Iceberg Lake on softening snow, then paused for lunch and to allow the sun to work it's magic. After regaining the saddle, we skied nice, soft rewarmed snow under sunny skies back toward Bagley Basin, and it skied so nicely we decided to make another lap. Lots of people out today enjoying the sunny weather, and also lots of loose wet sluffs (and huge rollerballs!) observed on solar slopes towards the end of the day. Great day in the mountains with great views of Shuksan and Baker as well!
