Feb 25, 2006 - Patrol Race Ski Tour - Open To All
« on: 12/17/05, 03:03 PM »

In the 1930s, the Mountaineers organized a ski race between their club lodges at Snoqualmie and Stampede Passes.  The race was the first of its kind in North America, with three-person teams racing over an 18-mile course.  Each racer had to carry basic survival gear and team members had to finish within a minute of each other.  The race ran from 1930 through 1941.  A couple years ago I skied the Patrol Race route with a friend and wrote about the trip here:

http://www.alpenglow.org/skiing/patrol-race-2004

On February 25, 2006, the Mountaineers will conduct a group outing along this historic route.  I will lead the tour.  The tour is open to skiers who are not Mountaineer members, subject to signing a waiver.

Requirements:

* 18 miles and 4,000 vertical feet of climbing.
* Meet at Mountaineers Snoqualmie Lodge at 5:30 am, Saturday, February 25.
* Headlamps, shovels, avalanche beacons and probes required.
* Be prepared for a long day (8-12 hours) of nearly continuous travel.
* Route description and equipment suggestions:

http://www.alpenglow.org/skiing/patrol-race-2004/patrol-route.html

* Signup opens January 2, 2006.
* Limit 16 skiers.
* Waiver is available online.
* To sign up, contact Mountaineers Member Services at 206-284-8484.
* Or sign up online (see "Activity Signup") at:

http://www.mountaineers.org

Logistics:

Participants may drive up the morning of the tour or may stay overnight at one of the Mountaineers lodges. Overnight lodging is available at the Mountaineers Snoqualmie Lodge Friday night, February 24, and at Meany Lodge (near Stampede Pass) Saturday night, February 25.  Dinner and breakfast will be provided for skiers staying overnight.  (I'll post information about the cost of lodging when I receive it.) Sign up with Mountaineers Member Services for lodge reservations at 206-284-8484.  Non-members participating in the tour are welcome to stay in the lodges for this event.

Skiers staying overnight at Meany Lodge will receive a snow-cat ride (about 3 miles) to Crystal Springs Sno-Park on Sunday morning.  Skiers electing not to stay overnight can ski out Saturday evening after the tour.  The Mountaineers will probably run a snow-cat shuttle out Saturday evening as well.  For trip coordination, contact Art Iodice, 206-399-3634 (email: api5260@cablespeed.com).

Special Program:

On Friday night, February 24, legendary Northwest skier, mountaineer and kayaker Wolf Bauer will provide a dinner-time talk at the Mountaineers Snoqualmie Lodge about his experiences in the Patrol Race during its heyday in the 1930s.  I'm told that this will mark Wolf's 94th birthday!  The Mountaineers are planning a special dinner for him.  In 1936, Wolf was a member of the team that set the course record of 4 hours, 37 minutes, 23 seconds--a record that remains unbroken to this day.  You can read more about Wolf Bauer on the following web-page:

http://www.mountaineers.org/nwmj/05/051_Bauer1.html

Wolf Bauer's program is open to all, not just skiers staying overnight at the lodge.  (I'll post details about times and costs for dinner and the program when I receive them.) Please sign up with Mountaineers Member Services at 206-284-8484 so the lodge volunteers can make sure there is enough room.

Is this going to be open for individuals or is there a requirement to have a group of three?

Should I just call the phone number and ask?

Thanks

This year it's just a tour. Not a race. So there's no need to form teams. The Mountaineers Backcountry Ski Committee (the group that asked me to lead the tour) is considering reviving the race next year. We'll see how it goes--whether people like the trip enough to want to race it.

I've  received details about the Mountaineer lodges. If you want to stay overnight at either lodge (Snoqualmie on Friday, 2/24 and/or Meany on Saturday, 2/25) the cost is $25 for dinner, bunk and breakfast, for each night. If you want to attend the Friday evening dinner and presentation by Wolf Bauer at Snoqualmie Lodge, without staying overnight, the cost is $15. If you don't want to have dinner, but would still like to hear Wolf speak, the lodge is asking a $5 donation. Make sure to sign up through the Mountaineers (see above message) so they know how many people are coming. Be aware that you don't need to stay overnight at either lodge to join the tour. Last year, the tour filled up quickly (too bad about the snowpack) so you should plan to sign up early.

Hi Lowell,
Just wanted to alert folks that this is the same day as
the Randonnee Rally at Alpental. So don't take on of those 16 spots in the patrol race if you plan on doing the lifelink series.

Cool

Lowell, would Fisher Outtabounds be preferable to a lightweight randonnee setup for this tour?  I have both and am leaning toward the Outtabounds (with skins) after reading your tour description.

And what gear will you be using?

It's also the same day as the Hog Loppet, although the Ski Patrol race sounds like a little more fun Cool

Outtabounds are no-wax skis with edges, aren't they? Those would probably be fine. You need to be prepared for sections of icy, rough travel through forest and crappy, crusty downhill skiing (fairly open and short) from Mirror Lake down to the Yakima Pass road system. A touring oriented ski like an Outtabound should be okay as long has you have good enough boots (or skills) to drive them through brief sections of crappy snow. Much of the route is road skiing, but there's also some trail breaking and some short downhills in (usually) challenging snow. That plus the overall distance is what makes the trip challenging.

I'll be making the trip using lightweight alpine skis, Dynafit bindings, and my "ultimate alpine touring boots" (customized mountaineering boots discussed last year on TAY). For traction, I'll have both thin skins (1 inch wide) and regular skins.

Thanks again for your efforts putting this together Lowell. I was thinking of making it a full weekend thus staying overnight at Meany Saturday and doing another tour and/or play with the fastest rope tow in the west on Sunday.
My questions are logistical: 1. If one stayed Sat at Meany will we have to carry our overnight gear all day or is someone arranging a shuttle of it to that lodge? 2. Cars--Since we end up either Sat eve or Sun at Crystal Springs snopark will someone shuttle us back to Snoq Lodge parking area or we prearrange our own?  Of course any cars left at Crystal Springs need a snopark pass.

Looking forward to the next ski trip.

1. The rough plan is to have somebody take a load of overnight bags on Saturday morning from Snoqualmie Lodge to Crystal Springs, where they will be transported by snowcat into Meany. So, if you bring a separate pack or duffle with overnight things to Snoqualmie Lodge Saturday morning, you can get it transported to Meany for you.

2. We're thinking of shuttling a small number of cars from Snoqualmie Lodge to Crystal Springs on Friday evening. We would arrange this with whoever plans to stay overnight at Snoqualmie Friday evening. Since I'm one of the organizers, and I want to hear Wolf Bauer speak, I'll be there. So, we'll get at least one car over there, which can be used to retrieve others. If you're planning to ski near Meany on Sunday, I expect it won't be hard to hitch a ride from the locals. But if you'd like to head home Saturday evening or Sunday morning, shuttling a car might be a good idea.

I believe Art Iodice will be contacting people after the sign-up period closes to talk about these logistics.

Chuck Welter of the Meany Lodge sent me the following information:

Quote
Participants wanting to spend the night at Meany for the $25 rate should email me directly at MeanyLodge@hotmail.com and bring cash or check to the lodge.

[Mountaineers] member services' systems are not flexible enough to handle a rate that is not standard.  And the online system is also incapable of this.

Art Iodice (206-399-3634) tells me that there is still room on this tour for sign-ups. So far, most of the sign-ups have been Mountaineers members. The tour is open to people outside the club too.

You don't need to stay at the Mountaineer lodges to do the trip. You can arrive Saturday morning and go home Saturday evening if you want. There is no charge for participating if you don't stay at the lodges.

Call Mountaineers member services (206-284-8484) to sign up for the trip.

i'm looking forward to meeting you all.
