Despite the crowd of skiers, boarders, snowshoers, avy classes, and a variety of dogs at the trailhead, we found ourselves quite alone on the shoulder of Cave Ridge in short order.
25-30% degree, east-facing slope at 5,000 ft showed some minor pinwheels and ski penetration to 4 inches with a slight sun crust. A pit revealed a loosely consolidated but distinct layer at 6 inches that barely moved with 3 shoulder taps. Inspection showed remnants of faceted old hoar. The next four feet were quite stable.
Powder pockets not sun affected were in the trees. The open slope skied nicely down into the Commonwealth Basin. The first 2,000 feet in the trees skied well with a few surprises from old tree bombs. Below this hard, crusty bomb remnants alternated with dense powder that skied well - just had to search out some lines. All in all, a good day out.
